Tilt shift lenses were originally designed to allow selective focus in-camera. Mostly, they were used for architectural photography to control perspective. Now, the style is really popular for producing faux miniaturised pictures, and PhotoPlus X6 has a brand new tilt shift effect in the program to help you produce these images in a couple of easy steps.

To produce a tilt shift effect, ideally, you’ll need a photograph shot from high up, like this:

Open the image in PhotoPlus X6 and crop it if required. With this image, we needed to crop it to lose some of the foreground so it focuses more on the pitch. You will need to set your crop to ‘Destructive’ in the crop context toolbar.

Once you’re happy with the composition, go to: Effects > Blur > Depth of Field.
A window will appear, along with white lines on your image.

Ensure the type of focus is set to Tilt Shift, then drag the nodes on the lines (on the photo) to set the focus area and blur graduation. Once you’re happy with that, boost your saturation up and increase clarity, then hit OK (all in the window).

The results should resemble a miniature or model effect, like this:

The tilt shift effect is really easy to achieve in PhotoPlus X6. Trains or a crowded shopping mall are good subject examples to try it out. Good luck!
